The Arthur Chung Convention Centre located at Liliendaal will be closed for 18 months to facilitate rehabilitation work that will commence on December 1, 2016.Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes and outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Limin (centre) flanked by representatives of government,Nike Air Max 90 Black Women, Chinese Embassy and employees of China Railway Ltd.The commencement of the project was signalled at a ceremony yesterday when representatives of the company responsible for the undertaking,Buffalo Sabres Gear, China Railway 17 Bureau Construction Engineering Company Limited, along with the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Limin, met with the Minister of Public Telecommunications Catherine Hughes at the building.The rehabilitation will be funded completely by the government of China through a grant aid as was done when the centre was first constructed between 2004 and 2006. Guyana, however, will contribute towards the provision of on-site security services.According to government’s assessment of the building, it was found that over the 10 years of continuous use, wear and tear coupled with the effects of natural elements including shifting foundations and saline breezes from the Atlantic Ocean took a toll on the building.It was said that the concrete stairways and floors on the upper level as well as ceilings are cracked in certain places. The foundation and walls on the ground floor also have widening cracks. As a result of structural movement and undulation, a number of the ceramic floor tiles have come loose.The Arthur Chung Convention Centre,Nike Tns Wholesale, LiliendaalThe back-up generating system at the building had stopped working a number of years ago and is expected to be replaced as well. It was renamed the Arthur Chung Convention Centre by President David Granger in March 2015.Hughes, under whose portfolio the centre falls, during her brief remarks yesterday expressed gratitude on behalf of the Guyanese government for the level of cooperation extended towards the nation throughout the years of association with the People’s Republic of China.She said that the Convention Centre is just one of the many gifts which the Chinese government has given Guyana and over its 10 years of existence, Guyanese,Deion Jones Falcons Jersey UK, private companies and public sector agencies have enjoyed the centre’s accommodation.“Secondary schools have held their graduation ceremonies here year after year. These halls, conference rooms, lobbies and lawns have hosted many weddings, religious ceremonies, Christmas and anniversary parties, and as we have heard, even CARICOM Heads of Government summits.”As it relates to the damage which the centre would have sustained over the years, Hughes said that much of it is structural in nature, and that all the cracks are not visible. She said that based on her little knowledge of civil engineering, she predicts that the company’s engineers are likely to find additional problems with the building, particularly under the floor when it is removed.Ambassador Zhang during his speech promised that after the rehabilitation process is finished, the centre will look better and be more structurally sound. He said that with government’s support the process can be done quite smoothly.
