The most common symptom prompting diagnosis of ACS, Dr Warnica said, is that of chest pain, often radiating off the left arm or angle of the jaw, pressure-like in character, and associated with nausea and sweating.This condition, according to him, usually occurs as a result of one of three problems: ST elevation myocardial infarction which could account for at least 30 per cent of all cases, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction accounting for 25 per cent or unstable angina accounting for 38 per cent.But according to Dr Warnica, “early and effective diagnosis and management of ACS has been shown to lower the risk of in-hospital deaths, and the risk of future complications of heart failure and arrhythmias.”He revealed that cardiac care centres in North America and Europe, for instance, have developed guidelines for the care of patients with an ACS that have become standards of care. Moreover, he noted that there is need for the local health sector to consider questions such as: “what are the current guidelines for ACS management?
